Why Do We Need A New Firehouse

1958 Fire Station Gearhart

The existing firehouse is outdated.  It was built in the 1950's by a coalition of local volunteers.  They did most of the work themselves!  The current building, constructed of hollow tile and cinder block, was built long before the impact of a Cascadia Subduction event was well known or understood.  The city's substantial investment of many hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment and volunteers housed in the existing building would be safeguarded and protected.  As our population grows our needs for services increases.  For example, there has been a 44% increase in the number of fire calls in the last five years including: Emergency medical calls, Motor vehicle accidents, beach rescues, home rescues, extractions, building fires, wildland/brush fires.

The Matrix below was used to rank potential fire station sites.  In the matrix a score of 1 is a positive, a score of 0 is a negative.  The total score indicates the ranking of the site.  A score of 12 is the best.
